If you’re unfamiliar with the different types of marijuana, also called Mary Jane or gangster, you might feel confused when you encounter any one of them when hanging out with friends. So today, let’s talk about these types and ways to identify them.
Marijuana Types and Ways to Recognize Them
As marijuana is called by many names and is available in several types, it may appear like completely different drugs if you’re uninitiated of them.
But what makes these types unique from one another are the ways the same drug is prepared even if they have similar psychoactive ingredients.
And speaking of psychoactive components is the drug’s potency, which varies from one plant to another (more on this in a bit). Then another thing that influences the intensity of the effects is the administration route. In any case, learn how to spot and identify the types. Check out the following.
Pot or Weed
This is the raw or unprocessed marijuana form, which is commonly smoked for its THC high. It is composed of the dried buds and leaves of the female Sativa and Indica cannabis plants.
How to spot a weed: I personally spot the weed by paying much attention to its look: It looks like a lumpy herbal mixture and smells pungent. Its recognizable odor is the same in its raw form and while being smoked.
If you’re a weed smoker, you can smell it in your clothing or breathe as a third hand smoke, like as I would do every time.
But if not, knowing weeds’ smell can help you recognize if you’re with a cannabis smoker or if you’re offered to smoke it.
Also called goldseal, Morrocan, black or rocky, it is made from the plant’s resin that is dried and prepared to come up with hashish blocks that appear as a solid and oily substance.
The way we are using it is by crumbling and then rolling it with ordinary tobacco, although some users smoke it in a chillum, bong or pipe (I prefer bong).
This is the interesting part – types of hashish are in a variety of colors, including brownish and dirty yellowish shades, to name some. You will notice that some of these substances are shiny and dark, while others are matte and lighter in color as well.
But now maybe you’re asking, “What is the texture like?” It’s not the same. Some feel hard and dry, while others are pliable and moist to the touch.
Don’t be fooled and end up buying cheap herbs or licorice because they look like hashish, too. Take note that hashish also has a pungent, strong odor like weed. I’ve learnt this not from the beginning of my smoker life, though – so in case you are having troubles with recognizing hashish, it’s still not the time to start worrying.
Baked marijuana goodies, including cookies or brownies, are prepared and cooked into food. Marijuana can also be used like an herb and added in other types of food.
On the other hand, marijuana can also be consumed as a drink, such as adding hashish oil and hashish to milk. As cannabis is oil-based, milk serves as a carrier because of its emulsive properties.
However, I am always having troubles with recognizing the smell of weed when added to food because other ingredients can mask it.
It is the least common but strongest cannabis form generally available in sealed plastic bags or tiny bottles.
In this form or type, you only need a small amount to achieve desired effects, through either painting it onto joints or cigarettes or smoking in a pipe.
Currently, another oil derived from cannabis becomes more and more popular. CBD Oil, also known as a cannabidiol can let us enjoy the benefits of marijuana (reduce stress, suppress hunger, improve sleep quality) without actually getting high as it’s deprived of THC.
Hand-rolled Marijuana Cigarettes
Also called doobies, spliffs or joints, hand-rolled cigarettes are another type of marijuana.
When you encounter this one, you can feel the lumpy weed texture through the rolling paper that makes it different from a hand-rolled tobacco cigar.
Both weed and hashish can be combined with a rolling tobacco for a soft and sticky preparation meant for hand rolling.
The Species of Marijuana
The types or forms of marijuana mentioned above may come from one of the two common plant species – the indica and the sativa. These species smell, look and taste different.
For one, Indica species grow stockier and shorter with purplish buds, while their sativa counterparts are thinner and taller. In addition, sativa strains can also grow up to 20 feet high and have loose branches. But now, you will also hear and read about hybrid marijuana strains, which are a cross germination of seeds coming from different locations.
The indica strain produces a relaxing and calming effect. A few of its notable characteristics include its yield, flowering time, location where its seeds are from and its various flavors.
Some names it is known for include haze, Northern Lights, granddaddy and purple haze.
This strain, on the other hand, has energizing effects. Many users use it in the morning or afternoon, I personally prefer using it in the morning (especially combining it with yoga may sometimes be the best option for me).
It is also preferred to fight exhaustion and depression. For its medical cannabis use, sativa strains are used in treating mood and ADHD disorders. If you’d use it, you can bring out your creative side and feel energized, like the same way I am doing when I am stuck in some freelancer projects, not sure if I will meet the deadlines and extremely missing some creativity.
It’s an emerging classification of marijuana that’s developed through the cross germination of the two ancient strains.
This strain is notable for its balanced marijuana effects from both strains.
How do you identify a strain? If you’re finding it difficult to identify a strain that you got high from, you should learn how to recognize the strains before smoking.
The bud’s size and shape
- Indica: They produce tightly packed and heavy buds that look chunky and short.
- Sativa: They produce narrow and long flowers. They are not tightly packed.
The color of the flowers/buds
Many strains produce green-colored buds. However, do not rely on color alone when identifying a strain because the color of the buds can be affected by the location’s environmental condition.
The bud’s taste and smell
- If you smell earthy flavors, you can tell that the herb you’re with has a Kush on it.
- If you encounter orange or yellow buds, you can tell that what you have belongs to strains that smell and taste citrus.
- Do you smell something like a skunk? If the buds smell this way, you’re with a Skunk strain or a hybrid that has a high level of Skunk on it.
- Does it smell sour? There are cannabis strains that have sour flavors and smell, and some popular ones in this category include Sour Kush and Blue Diesel.
How you’re feeling
Are you feeling energized and more creative?
If you get an intense head high but with little body effects, you got a hybrid with a high amount of sativa or pure sativa. It will leave you feeling alert, uplifted and more creative. And if you are a freelance worker and you have finished most of the tasks with deadlines, you most probably now know what it will be felt like.
Are you feeling an intense body high, instead?
If you’re feeling a little tired or hungry or pretty relaxed but with an intense body high, you got yourself a hybrid with high amounts of indica or a pure indica. You may also feel pain relief with this strain.
Do you notice a balance of these effects?
Both body and head high are signs you’ve smoked or ingested a hybrid with equal amounts of sativa and indica on it.
You’ll find these types of marijuana in dispensaries that sell different marijuana strains as we’ve talked about above. Definitely, equipping yourself with knowledge on how to identify marijuana in their many forms can help you figure out what you’re with when you encounter them.
It’s how important dispensary marketing is. With its information dissemination and public awareness campaigns and efforts, the experts can help you make an informed and better decision about marijuana consumption and its different forms including weed, hashish, hash oil and edibles, to name some.
Hope you picked up valuable information on how to recognize different types of marijuana in this article. As encouraging it all may sound, don’t forget that marijuana is addictive like any other dopamine boosting substance in our lives. There is a fine boarder between occasionally having a joint and becoming a pot head smoking everyday. You don’t want that, so smoke rationally to not get addicted.
